Faber & Faber: Movie Trailers

Movie Trailers for the 5 film book covers I am re-designing.

28 Days Later

Goodfellas

Se7en

Taxi Driver

Trainspotting

Art Direction: Skateboard Art Books

Here are covers of the books that I am using as comparative research, they show examples of skateboard art and have information on the brands and designers.
I am going to buy Disposable - A History of Skateboard Art, as i can use it as primary research. I can look at it for examples of layout and how the book is organized into chapters.

Art Direction: Es Catalogue

Research into layout and design; a catalogue from the skate shoe company Es.
The use of full double page spreads with photos look interesting and is an idea i could use and develop.

Crit Notes: D&AD, YCN Briefs

Beck's:
  • Initial research into the Beck's brand and brand identity.
  • Beck's USP brewed according to the German Purity Law.
  • Research of existing advertising for Beck's.
  • Further research into other beer brands and their advertising campaigns; Heineken, Corona, Amstel, Carling, Fosters, Carlsberg and Budweiser.
  • Work using the existing Beck's colour palette to enforce brand recognition and identity.
  • Found examples of the Heineken 'Made to Entertain' Campaign relating to the my brief Beck's Fusions Art and Music.

Faber & Faber:
  • Decided on producing 5 book cover designs for the titles; 28 Days Later, Goodfellas, Se7en, Taxi Driver, Trainspotting.
  • Initial research into Faber & Faber and Penguin Books.
  • Found examples of existing covers from the Faber & Faber range.
  • Looked at examples of artist designed covers and books.

Actions:
I now need to;
  • Research alcohol brands such as Absolut Vodka and Budweiser that have links to music and sports events.
  • Further research both Faber & Faber and Penguin Books to find current and past cover designs of individual books and book sets.
  • Research of book sets will be helpful as I can see how typography and colour are used to show continuity.
  • Research typography and type design.
  • Start initial idea generation and thumbnail sketches.
  • Watch the 5 films to recap and understand them, maybe get quotes to be used on the cover designs.

Advertising: Ellis Brigham Proposal

Creative approach:
I am going to research the brand Ellis Brigham to find out about the company history and to get examples of their existing advertising. I hope to create a series of advertising pages, both single and double paged, to promote the company.
I will keep the designs simple and will include the current Ellis Brigham logo on every page. The outcome to this project will be a series of advertising pages, a research file and development sketch book.

Unique brand qualities:
To identify the unique brand qualities I have researched the brand history looking at their website and requesting catalogues from the company.
They specialize in ski, snowboard and climbing equipment and accessories.
The staff are knowledgeable and know about the products as they all have experience with the sports and equipment.
Dependable- the company is reliable, easy to contact buy phone and has a large stock list.
Enthusiastic- the staff are people who participate in the activities so are enthusiastic and have a keen interest in the sports.

Comparative Research:
I will look into other companies specializing in ski and snowboarding such as Burton snowboards, Forum and TSA.
I will also look at examples of ski and snowboarding magazines to find examples of existing advertising of both Ellis Brigham and other companies.
I will find comparative research from Millets, Field and Trek, Blacks, Freespirit and Active sports shops.

Demographic Profiles:
The company aims their advertising at the extreme sports demographic, such as climbers and snowboarding.
I will look in magazines relating to the extreme sports to find examples of adverts and the target audience will read these magazines: snowboard, Transworld Snowboarding, Method, Whitelines, Powder, Skiing Magazine, Climber, Climbing and Rock and Ice.

Specialist Requirements:
  • The company logo
  • Foam board
  • I will need to find out page dimensions for the magazines that the adverts will be printed in.

Sourcing of text and others images:
Some of the text I will use can be sourced from the company website. The images I will use can be sourced from the internet.

Copyright and ethical matters:
I will make sure all of my images are credited and the text I use is referenced.

Art Direction: Proposal

Define your Collection:
The history of skateboard art and culture from the early surf to skate transition until the present day skate culture.

Define your creative approach:
The book I will be producing will document the history of skateboard focusing on the history of the deck art. I hope to produce a book with a contemporary design and a modern look and feel.

What are your influences and comparative research:
I am influenced by both skate and BMX culture and will gather research from film books and magazines:
Thrasher
Lodown
Sidewalk
Sidewalk surfer
Skate
DigBMX
Document
Kingpin
Ride UK BMX
Wallride
I will look through skate and street art books such as dysfunctional, concrete to canvas and board. I have watched the films ‘Dogtown and Z-boys’ ‘Lords of Dogtown’ this was a major influence on choosing this subject. I am going to watch the documentary film ‘Rollin’ Through the Decade’ and ‘Black Flys’. I will source the films on dvd and take still images to use in my book or research.

Consideration of structure and sequence of information:
Chapter 1 Early days, surf to skate
Chapter 2 The early style riding low and flat
Chapter 3 Riding pools
Chapter 4 The move to vert
Chapter 5 The evolution of the skate board
Chapter 6 The deck graphics: early graphics
Chapter 7 The deck graphics: modern day graphics

Approach to Layout and Editorial Design:
I am going to keep the layout design contemporary and the style of the book clean.
I will show both whole page images and single deck art frames. In will use my references for research to compare layouts and styles.

Imposition Planning:
I will start by constructing a booklet showing the pages as they will appear in the book.
This will also be shown using a flat plan of every page that I can work on as the book develops.

Format and Size:
The book will be 25.4mm by 20.3mm and will be in landscape.

Page Length:
The final page count will be 120 pages.

Binding:
The book will be Perfect bound with a printed cover and a matt finish. I will research prices and time scales from local printers and organises a suitable time for printing.

Production and Timescales:
Week 1 write proposal and gather images and body text.
Week 2 finishing gathering images and editing them, work on layout and layout plan, setup indesign document CMYK 150dpi.
Week 3 start work on the book production laying out main images and chapter divides.
Week 4 finish the image placement and start designing the cover.
Week 5 add in body text and proof print/read.
Week 6 finish work on the book ready for printing.
Week 7 book is away for printing.

Specialist Requirements:
Finding a printer and getting the book bound.

Workflow, Appropriate to Project:
I will be working on Indesign CS2, I will be using designers spreads.
All of my images will be .jpeg or . tif
I will be using CS2 as I can then work both at home and at college

Sourcing of Text and Use of Others Images:
I will need to use all of my influences and references to source the body text for the book, I may also have to rely on the Internet for extra body text. I will also try to get movie stills from ‘Dogtown and Z-boys’ and the other movies I will watch.

Credits, Copyright and other Ethical Matters:
I will need to include any sources I have used for images and text, I will have a separate page of credits and will have a referencing section at the back of the book.

Quality of Images:
I will use images in .jpeg .jpg .tif formats and they will be CMYK colour for printing at 150dpi. I hope to be able to take some of my own photographs as well as using high quality scans and images from other people and the Internet.

File Backup Method:
I will back up my files regularly on a memory stick and on my home Mac. I will burn final versions on CD/DVD.

Faber & Faber: Proposal

Module 2: Advance Typography Brief: Faber and Faber

Outline your idea/conceptual approach in response to the chosen brief:
I will research to find out all of the books in the series then work on a simple design that doesn’t change between all of the titles, only the colour of the cover etc. change. The cover design should be able to fit/relate to every book in the series. The final outcome will be a series of five or six book covers selected from the list. This will show how the theme works without having a lot of covers to produce due to limit on deliverable boards. I will work on idea generation and development, to show how I worked to get to my final cover designs. The final outcome will be a folder of research, A3 development drawings and print work and the final cover art.

What will be your comparative research – look at the competition?
I will research into other book series, such as series by Penguin books, that are available to see other examples of cover design from other designers. I will also research into Faber and Faber to get more company information and understand the style of design that would work for the series of covers. I will research into penguin designers books such as the ‘Crime and Punishment’ cover by Fuel or ‘The Idiot’ by Ron Arad

What audience are you designing for or trying to reach?
The film series of books attracts both film enthusiasts and professionals. The books could also relate to film and media student, or just a person looking for a gift for a film fan. The film market is open to people of all ages, and the specific title of the film book will draw in an audience of a certain age.

Look at past/present campaigns for the company you will design/advertise for and comment on use of images and ideas?
I can find the original covers from each book in the film series. I could even look at the film posters and cases for ideas. The cover art will have to work both on B format and demy format. The Faber and Faber logo must be incorporated in the final design.

Possible primary research or study:
I intend go into a bookshop or library and look for examples of box sets and series of books. I will find out information about book and magazine cover design from the library and the internet. www.faber.co.uk www.penguin.co.uk www.penguin.com.

Beck's: Proposal

Module 1: Packaging Design Brief: Beck’s

Outline your idea/conceptual approach in response to the chosen brief:
I will create or modify the existing packaging and incorporate my own illustration or print work. I intend to design artwork that will be able to be used on the cardboard packaging for Beck’s beer bottles. I will look in specific books relating to branding and development such as ‘Branding from brief to finished solution’. I will be researching colour that relates to the Beck’s brand. I am going to produce an outcome for some of the varying range of Beck’s communication channels and packaging such as a four bottle pack, an eighteen bottle crate and a six bottle crate. The final outcome will be contemporary and vibrant, it will be adaptable across all of the beck communication channels. As part of the campaign I will create a series of posters and give-away items such as postcards.

What will be your comparative research – look at the competition?
I will look in supermarkets at examples of existing packaging. I hope to find examples of packaging construction for beer bottle boxes. I intend research into examples of previous Beck’s packaging designs and artwork. I will need to get information about the box and bottle/can sizes and decide what packaging elements I want to design. I will research into other beer brand packaging and advertising and work on producing an outcome that relates to the Beck’s fusions music event. Beck’s have a limited edition run of artist designed label bottles called Beck’s Canvas that could be adapted as part of the campaign.

What audience are you designing for or trying to reach?
Age 18 to 34 year old men and women with a progressive, optimistic outlook and who value independent thought. People buy the multi-packs in supermarkets not clubs or pubs so the advertising will be seen more by shoppers than people clubbing etc. For example a group of mates buying a crate and going to the beach. Getting to the clubbing audience would be achieved by adapting the Canvas campaign further as in clubs the bottle is what will be seen.

Look at past/present campaigns for the company you will design/advertise for and comment on use of images and ideas?
The packaging designs usually display a bottle, so I could take my own photographs using the light tent and a reflector. I have looked at some of the current advertising and packaging for Beck’s, it shows the link to the art and music area that is the focus for this project brief. I will get examples of the existing packaging for all of the types of can and bottle packaging.

Possible primary research or study:
I intend email Beck’s and try and get hold of some past packaging designs and advertising campaign material.
I will look at the work of existing designers who have work on Beck’s projects in the past.

Critical Study: Proposal

Statement of Purpose:
I expect to develop a greater understanding of his work, his motivation.
What started his use of sreet art?
How others see his work…

What do you hope to learn from this study? How does it relate to your area of practice?
I will build a research file that I can use to answer my title question and which will support my understanding of his and other street/art/design work.

Methodology:
I intend to start by reading the relevant books by Shepard Fairey showing examples of his work, plus a relating website showing his current projects. Also I will be looking into all possible relating artists and designers, for example Banksy, D*Face and The London Police.

What problems may you encounter?
I will find out if there are any places currently exhibiting examples of his and other designers work and go and visit. I will review all work, articles and publications and compare work of his with pieces by other artists/designers.
